FSK District Super Derbies
In 2017, there will still be two Super Derbies ran in Francis Scott Key District, with the divide along the old Catoctin Mountain and Appalachian Trail Districts. If your pack was in the Catoctin Mountain District last year, you will race in the Northern FSK District Super Derby this year.
These are Packs 48, 243, 266, 270, 271, 274, 280, 281, 324, 622, 628, 662, 727, 866, 1055, 1069, 1070, 1191, 1628, and 1998.
If your pack was with the AT last year, the information on this page does not apply to you!
Rules
Click here to download the 2017 Northern FSK District Super Derby rules. The rules on page 1 will suffice for most racers. If you are going to try to push the rules, please read the rest.
The most frequently violated rule is #5 having to do with the wheel size. We use this gauge to check whether the wheel has been over-sanded. No car that fails the wheel check will race. You have been warned!
Eligibility
- Tigers
- Wolves
- Bears
- Webelos (1 & 2 combined)
Date
Registration Times / Race Times
This year there will be no Friday night registration. Therefore it is important to arrive during your registration time, listed below. Registration will close at the time indicated.
Racing Division | Registration Time | Expected Race Time |
Tigers | 9:00-10:30 AM | no earlier than 12:00 |
Wolves | 9:00-10:30 AM | no earlier than 12:30 |
Bears | 10:30-12:00 PM | no earlier than 1:00 |
Webelos | 10:30-12:00 PM | no earlier than 1:30 |
We will do our best to meet the expected race start times above. We will not start earlier than the race times listed above.
Official Scale
Most delays at registration will be due to overweight cars. Cars will not complete registration until they weight 5.000 oz or less on the official scale. The official scale at the Super Derby will be accurate to 0.005 oz and is checked with a 5.000 oz calibration weight. Cars that passed the weight check at a local Pack Pinewood Derby may not pass the weight check at the Super Derby, especially if the Pack used a scale accurate to 0.1 oz.
One easy way to avoid the stress of modifying your car on race day is to pre-drill hole(s) so that the car is definitely below 5 oz. Then add an easily removed weight, such as putty to bring it back up to 5 oz. Then the weight of the car can be easily adjusted at the Super Derby. It's no fun to drill into a car on race day!
Pack Pre-Registration
Pack registration fees are $60 for each Pack ($45 for LDS Packs). As mentioned above, this registers three cars from each racing division.
Please send payment (made out to Pack 1070) to 206 Polaris Dr., Walkersville, MD 21793 by February 20th, 2017.
Also fill out the online registration spreadsheet with the names of the racers and their cars (A link to the spreadsheet has been emailed to the Derby Point of Contact for each Pack). Racer and car names will be displayed on the big screen.
Individual Registration
Individual scouts beyond the four per racing division may race for $5. Please bring exact payment (cash or check) to the event. Also, to minimize registration time on race day, please send an email to derby@pack1070.org before the race with the name of the racer, rank of the racer, and name of the car.
We will only be holding scout races this year, no Open Class races for leaders, siblings, etc.
Location
Concessions
Concessions will be available during the race. Proceeds to support the host church's youth.
Patches and Trophies
Racers may pick up their cars when their racing division is complete. (So you don't have to wait for other divisions to finish). Each participant will receive a Super Derby patch when they retrieve their car.
The top 3 racers in each racing division will receive a trophy.
The racer with the fastest single heat will receive a separate trophy and take home the fastest heat traveling plaque for a year.
